Refined Sugarfree Cranberry Sauce

Refined Sugarfree Cranberry Sauce

It just wouldn’t be Christmas or Thanksgiving without some cranberry sauce on your festive table to pair with that delicious turkey, would it?  Most cranberry sauce that you buy in a jar is full of sugar and so, because I can’t eat the white stuff, I set about making my own Refined Sugarfree Cranberry Sauce.  My version is sweetened with a touch of honey, and that’s it.  A delicious holiday treat that won’t send your blood sugar levels soaring (save that for the dessert!)
Refined Sugarfree Cranberry Sauce

It’s so easy to make this delicious refined sugarfree Cranberry Sauce that you’ll never need to buy the pre-made stuff again.  Plus I think it tastes so much better when you make it yourself from scratch. You start by adding the cranberries to a saucepan on a low heat.  Then, zest and juice the orange and add both the orange juice and zest to a saucepan along with the cranberries.  Next, you need to peel and grate the ginger and add that to the saucepan as well.Refined Sugarfree Cranberry Sauce Ingredients

The next step is to add the honey, cloves and cinnamon stick to the saucepan.  (Use 2 tbsps if you prefer your cranberry sauce quite tart, 3 if you prefer it sweeter.  Or add 2 tbsps and taste – you can always add more later).  Turn the heat up and cook all the ingredients on a medium heat until everything starts simmering, then place a lid on and continue to simmer for another 5 mins.

Once cooled, you can remove the cinnamon and cloves and pour into a serving dish.  You can keep this refined sugarfree Cranberry Sauce covered in the fridge for a day or two – it’s a great one to make in advance of Christmas lunch to give yourself a bit more time on the day.  I love that you can adjust the sweetness to your personal taste.  As I don’t eat a lot of sugary things I find I need less sweetness in foods these days so I like my Cranberry Sauce served fairly tart.

It’s the perfect addition it to your Thanksgiving meal or Christmas dinner and so easy, you’ll wonder why you haven’t made it before!  You can also serve it alongside your cheese plate as a kind of chutney.  I also like to use some of the leftovers as a compote on top of my yoghurt in the morning!
