Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Paté

Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Paté

Smoked Mackerel Paté reminds me of days spent down at our beach hut in Frinton-on-Sea.  A huge fish platter for lunch, with giant prawns, crab, hot smoked salmon, lobster, all served with a big bowl of Hollandaise Sauce (and washed down with a glass of champagne!)  And my favourite part of the spread was a big bowl of smoked mackerel pate served with a crusty baguette.  Well, these days the baguette is definitely out, but I’ve found a way to make sure the smoked mackerel paté is still on the menu.

And the best part – the whole recipe is just thrown in the mixer and only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish! So, how to make my delicious Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Paté?Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Paté in bowl with some spread on toast with bite taken out

Start by removing the skins from the smoked mackerel.  They should just peel off easily, and they can be discarded.

Juice the lemons and set the juice aside.  Remove the leaves from the tougher stalks of the parsley (I used flat leaf parsley, but curly parsley would work just as well.  Roughly chop the parsley (it doesn’t need to be finely chopped as the mixer will finish the job).

Break up the mackerel fillets into the mixer and add the lemon juice and the chopped parsley.  Add a very generous serving of crushed black pepper – the more the better in my opinion. (There’s no need for salt in this recipe as the mackerel fillets are already very salty).

Blend the ingredients in the mixer for a couple of minutes.  The longer you blend for, the smoother the resulting pate will be.  Scrape down the sides of the mixer with a spatula and blend again to incorporate all the mixture.

Spoon out the smoked mackerel pate into a serving dish.  Spread on my Grain-Free Bread (lightly toasted is delicious) or my Grain-Free Crackers, as a light lunch, or you could just serve a bowl of it with some vegetable crudité.  I also love it on Grain-Free Blinis as an appetiser for a party.

If you’re not following SCD or don’t have issues with dairy, you could add a couple of tbsps of cream cheese into the mixer.  The resulting paté will be much creamier and more spreadable.Spreading Dairy-Free Smoked Mackerel Paté onto Grain Free Toast
