SCD Mincemeat – No added sugar

Some foods only come into their own at a certain Christmassy time of year.  Mulled Wine, Turkey and of course Mincemeat.  The Christmas season hasn’t really started until you’ve had your first Mince Pie of the year and that spicy, fruity flavour is so comforting and familiar.  Usually Mincemeat has plenty of added fat and sugar which is why I created my own SCD Mincemeat. My recipe has no added sugar and comes without the suet too making it vegan!  It just has the natural sweetness from the dried fruits.  SCD Mincemeat (No added sugar)

So how to make my delicious SCD Mincemeat?  You need to start by peeling and coring the pears.  Add them to the food processor along with the dried apricots and dates.  Blend on high until all the ingredients are combined into a paste. (It doesn’t matter if there are still chunks of apricots and dates as there will be plenty of other fruit mixed in too).  It will be quite a wet mix at this point as this is the base of the sugarfree mincemeat.

The next step is to add the raisins, sultanas and currants and stir through. (You can use any combination of fruits that you like.  If you can’t find currants, just add extra raisins or sultanas, or even more chopped dates!).

Then you need to zest the lemon and orange.  (Make sure to only grate off the coloured parts.  If you go too far into the white pith it becomes very bitter!)  Add the zest to the bowl along with the juice of the orange.  Then, add the dry ingredients.  These are the flaked almonds and the spices (cinnamon, mixed spice and nutmeg).  Finally, add the whiskey and stir everything through to combine well.  (you can always leave out the whiskey for a non-boozy version!)

Spoon the mixture into sterilised glass airtight jars and store in a cool place (a cupboard, pantry or a fridge are all fine).  Because of the nature of mincemeat – the fact that it is mainly made with preserved fruits, it will last a long time – easily up to 6 months.  The alcohol in the whiskey helps to preserve its shelf life too!SCD Mincemeat (No added sugar)

Use the SCD Mincemeat to make Mince Pies, Mince Crumble or even a Christmas Pudding.   The perfect Christmas treat all served with a glass of Mulled Wine.  It really does pack that festive punch and whatever you cook with it, I guarantee that your house will end up smelling just like Christmas!SCD Mincemeat (No added sugar)
